One consumer product that was readily available in the USSR and
relatively inexpensive was vodka. Alcoholism and absenteeism became a
serious problem in the Soviet Union. It impacted worker productivity and
caused great
social harm. Unlike many other problems in Soviet society, alcoholism
was one that could not be easily hidden by the Party.
