This photograph was taken in Moscow in July of 1971. It shows a man
reading state censored "news" from government controlled newspapers (Pravda,
Izvestia). The Russian word "Pravda" ironically means "The Truth".
On the left, a government display highlights the economic achievements of
the Soviet Union. Strict control of the press, television and radio by the
Communist Party was
essential for sustaining the Soviet system in Russia.
