Moscow subway system called the "Metro" provides an inexpensive and fast
way to get around the city. Some nine different subway lines transfer
Muscovites between some 150 metro stations. The fare is the same,
regardless of how far you travel.
The Metro stations are
architecturally elegant with chandeliers and paintings. They were
designed by prominent Russian architects, artists and sculptors. The
first subway line was opened in 1935.
The system is heavily subsidized so travel is extremely inexpensive.
